Knowing there was significant risk using an unproven, older and retired ex goalkeeper, we pressed on to deal with our injured men’s goalkeeper. Our goal is to maintain our position top of the table.

Unfortunately, the last-minute addition of the goalkeeper was not enough to prevent our drop from top spot to midway through the table. We are extremely fortunate to be able to have a call up adult free agent goalkeeper at our age group willing to came in last minute to play for us. The rust was evident, but the existing skill was also on display.

Unfortunately, due to many years of inactivity, our goalkeeper pulled his calf and groin. He is still able to help us but with limited mobility. His experience as keeper in the past is ever more important. In addition, our team really needs to step up as a single unit to help support, protect and clearly communicate with our new backup keeper.

Furthermore, in addition to losing our starting keeper, we were faced with numerous injury challenges. I definitely did not foresee nor expect such so many injured players at the same time. I should have known better with the majority of the players in their 40’s, 50’s and even some 60’s. The boys are still playing as hard as they did in their younger years. The passion and the willingness to fight is not diminished. Nonetheless, this translates to more banged up bodies especially in our age group with lengthy recovery times.

In addition to our injured men’s goalkeeper, we are also losing experienced players. This will make it challenging for us to climb back up to the top of the table. Our squad will never give up nor back down. Moreover, we will lose even more players as we head into the deep summer and players start taking their family summer holidays.

Time to start looking for adult free agent players in defense, midfield and forward positions as well!
